Goal update - Week of January 10, 2016

The only thing that is constant is change.

Looking back on the past few months to a year, I am starting to realize this more and more. In college, I could schedule my week out and be able to that plan pretty consistently. Lately it has been impossible to stick to a well-executed game plan for longer than 2-3 days in a row.

Here's how things normally go (Note: Although I was aware of this pattern before the New Year, I was reminded of it this past week.) On Sundays I plan out my week: meetings, obligations, goals to accomplish, and individual tasks to complete. I will draft a schedule which would allow me to effectively accomplish everything, but inevitably, something would come up and disrupt my schedule, leaving me in a state of consistent "catch up" until my plan expired.

This scenario most often occurs at the office, but I have noticed it affecting my personal life as well. I have come to realize that this situation is likely occurring due to a lack of realistic, long-term planning.

Without sounding like I am bragging, I am quite good at managing tasks and executing action plans. I am able to prioritize task and delegate... however my "get it done... now!" attitude often prevents me from wanting to set aside "free time" to catch up on things when my schedule starts to shift.

Just like a body builder needs to program 1-2 rest days a week to allow his muscles to rest and grow, highly productive people need to schedule in "rest days" to catch up and/or rest. I realize this now, and I will keep this in mind in the weeks, months, and years ahead.
